Shoe Reviews: Racing Flats

In today's running world of "minimalism" the once popular category of "racing flat" has taken a bottom turn. But most avid racers still seem to turn to this category for their weekly races. The term "racing flat" can be a confusing category these days with the "heel to toe" drop talk in the running industry. "Heel to toe" drop refers to the height of the shoe off the ground in the heel + the height of the shoe off the ground in the toe which produces an angle to the shoe. Most traditional trainers contain a drop of 12 mm from heel to toe. Minimalist shoes are categorized minimal when they enter the 4 mm drop area. And most racing flats are not quite that flat at all. Racing flats feature "heel to toe" drops in + around 8-9 mm. We feature several flats here at Fleet Feet Raleigh. Here's the run down:

Adidas Adios 2 (115.00 MSRP) - at 7.5 ounces for men + 6.3 ounces for women, the Adios is a neutral quick flat that is firmer than most making it one of the most efficient, durable shoes in it's category. Haile Gebrselassie broke the world record for the marathon in this shoe so it's popularity isn't surprising. But the extended torsion system from the midfoot to the forefoot makes this shoe very fluid for it's weight + surprisingly durable. Great as a lightweight trainer as well.

Adidas Tempo 5 (110.00 MSRP) - at 8.5 ounces for men + 7.3 ounces for women, the Tempo is a very light stability racer. For the runner who's foot is pronating just slightly more than it needs to, the Tempo is a quick, but stable racer for the average heel striker. Like the Adios the torsion bar extends slightly into the forefoot + the Continental rubber featured on the tread keeps this racing shoe quite durable as well. Adidas's signature "Sprint Web" runs through the toe box + the midfoot giving it a snugger arch fit. Also good for those trying to transition into a minimal type shoe, but need a mild amount of stability.

Mizuno Wave Ronin 3 (105.00 MSRP) - 7 ounces for men + 6 ounces for women, the Ronin 3 is Fleet Feet Raleigh's lightest featured racing shoe. It features a slim, low to the ground feel with a stable, but firm heel. A neutral racing shoe, the Ronin features a signature Mizuno fit: snug heel + midfoot with an open, but natural toe box. Made to help you go faster.

There are many great racing shoes out there, but we've chosen these three based upon their design, durability and versatility. It can be confusing discerning which shoe is right for you so come see us + let us clear up any questions you may have.

Happy racing.

Brent
