Rest to Recover to Run Better

With the approaching change in temperatures, getting out on the road + the trail can get tougher + tougher. But if you've been in a heavy fall race season or even if you been a bit tight lately, the holiday season can be as good a season as any to help your muscles recover from training.

It can be the most difficult thing for runners to do, but many of us have heard it all before, good cross training + rest give the body great balance for a fresh spring season. A few ideas:

1. Try circuit training indoors with light weights - simple push ups, crunches, lunges + core exercises just a few times a week can help other fast twitch muscles to fire + engage a part of your body you wouldn't normally train during the running season.
2. Try yoga - a perfect way to focus not only the body, but the mind as well. Running is just as mental as it is physical.
3. Try commuting to work - this can be difficult in the cold seasons, but living in NC you'll inevitably have a few of those freakish warm days. If you have a good route to work, grab the bike + see how cycling can help balance out your training.
4. Try hitting the pool - a good swim in the indoor pool can be one of the best ways for the body to get a solid workout without the impact.

But remember, rest can be a very, very good thing. So take the opportunity this holiday season to change a thing or two + revitalize your training. Rest to recover + you will most certainly run better.
